Lund University kicked off 2026 with the arrival of 700 new international students. Volunteer mentors introduced them to life in Lund before starting orientation week.

On the 12th of January, approximately 700 international students were welcomed to Lund, as the universities’ spring Arrival Day took place. Following Arrival Day, new international students experience orientation weeks, where they take part in activities introducing them to Lund and their faculties. Lindsey Fuchs, a new student from Canada, says that the arrival day was hectic but rewarding.

– Awesome but pretty busy, the volunteers were great after travelling, says Lindsay Fuchs.

The scheme involves 200 volunteer Lund students who act as international mentors. Their role includes signposting new arrivals so they can check in and collect house keys. Mentors also run orientation activities in which they become key contacts for new students, create environments for new friendships and answer questions about life in Lund.

Volunteer mentors are both Swedish and international students. Lindsey Fuchs says the day was a great introduction to student life in Lund.

– With faculty, nations and student union events there is still lots to do but having lots of events was tiring after having just arrived, she explains.

This year’s schedule differs from previous years due to a revised focus on recovery to combat ”information overload”. This follows comments from past students regarding less lectures and more free time in order for students to get the most out of their first weeks in Lund.
